Short answer: an engineer needs the mechanics and loads, the motion profile and accuracy required, the number of axes and how they interact, the existing control platform and networks, the power supply and environment, and any standards or preferred brands. The more of this you provide up front, the faster and more accurate the proposal.
Checklist
Application
- What the machine does, and what this axis or group of axes does
- Current throughput and target throughput
Mechanics
- Load mass or inertia; transmission (gearbox, belt, screw, rack) and ratios
- Travel distance, orientation (horizontal/vertical) and friction
Motion
- Move distance and time, dwell, cycle rate and duty cycle
- Required positioning accuracy and repeatability
- Synchronisation between axes — gearing, cams, registration marks
Controls and interfaces
- Existing PLC or motion platform, fieldbus and HMI
- Feedback requirements (absolute position at power-up?)
- Safety functions required
Site
- Supply voltage and frequency; cabinet space
- Ambient temperature, wash-down, dust or vibration
- Country of installation and support expectations
Constraints
- Preferred or mandated brands, budget and schedule
Drawings, photos or a short video of the machine are extremely helpful. Send them through Ask an Engineer.
